Play Overview:

Some people are born to do great things. Some people change the world. Some people rise from humble beginnings to beat back the forces of darkness in the face of insurmountable odds.

"Puffs" is the story of the people who sit in class next to those people. And badgers. Badgers are great.

Not unlike Stoppard’s Rosencrantz And Guidenstern Are Dead, Matt Cox’s multi-award-winning comedy shows us life at a certain school of Witchcraft and Wizardry through a different lens. Join Wayne, Oliver and Megan (three students of a certain house who really, really like badgers) and all your favorites from the Potter (who?) series for a rollercoaster ride through seven years of magic, madness and mayhem.

We are seeking actors for the following roles:

Wayne Hopkins (Lead): Male

20s-30s. The hero. Totally uncool, but full of charm and heart. Loyal to a T.. Likes comic books and video games, knows nothing about magic or this weird magic world he is now a part of. Best friends with Oliver and Megan. Any ethnicity/cultural background.

Megan Jones (Lead): Female

20s-30s. One of the main trio; begins the show by only desiring to live up to her mother's reputation: a dark wizard currently in Wiz Priz for being such a bad-ass Death Buddy in her youth. Favorite store: Hot Topic. Favorite color: black. Over time, her tough veneer begins to soften, as a budding romance with Oliver becomes apparent. Defiant and headstrong on the surface, the audience begins to see that her adamance of being completely unique and independent really stems from her desire to be loved and accepted. Any ethnicity/cultural background.

Oliver Jones (Lead): Male

20s-30s. One of the main trio. Incredibly smart and cerebral, he is a math wiz, and proud of it; lovingly a nerd from New Jersey. After ending up at wizarding school, he finds out he isn't the top of his class, and instead begins a fantastical journey of friendship and even some love, better than any algebra class could ever promise. Real comic chops, incredibly appealing, youthful. Any ethnicity/cultural background.

Cedric/Mr. Voldy (Supporting): Male

20s. An appealing comic actor to play the pivotal roles of Cedric in Act I and Mr. Voldy in Act II. Cedric: A champion. Athletic, winning, popular, and charming. Everyone’s favorite, but still loyal, patient, and kind. A leading example of a Puff. Mr. Voldy: Evil. Like, reeeaaally evil. Wants to rule the world in shadows and darkness and terror. (Or, ya know, just an amazing Ralph Fiennes impression.) Any ethnicity/cultural background.

Narrator (Lead): Male/Female

20s-30s. The narrator of the story. She/he guides us through our entire show of Puffy-ness. British accent. Must be a great storyteller, as she/he must keep the audience engaged and updated on all the goings-on. Can be a bit of a know-it-all, but still relatable and appealing. Comedy skills a must, improv background is a plus. Any ethnicity/cultural background

J.Finch/Zach Smith/Others (Supporting): Male

20s–30s. Improvisational skills a plus. Boyish & fun. Chipper and happy, except when his life is in mortal danger. Any ethnicity/cultural background.

Play Overview:

Two years ago, the Widow’s husband, a fireman, died in a burning building trying to save a baby. Instead of grieving, she keeps his Soul in a box in her bedroom and takes it out for conversation and the occasional hug. She and the Wooer, a friend of her husband, go on a date — one that he has been looking forward to for years. While they are out, the Soul and the Body play out moments from their life with the Widow, and their death.

From the Director: “I think that there’s a very interesting and confusing place, where the stark realities of grief collide with our flowery, poetic notions of sadness. It’s difficult to reconcile those opposites happening inside of us simultaneously, especially when they arise from something tragic and senseless. I love the way Vigils approaches this phenomenon: with humor, poetry, and realism. It’s very theatrical, in the best sense of the term.”

We are seeking actors for the following roles:

WIDOW - (F) (Age: 20s? 30s? 40s? Young enough that it’s a little bit extra sad that she’s already a widow) A grieving widow.

SOUL - (M/F/X) (Age: Timeless, I guess, but probably similar to the age of the BODY) The Widow’s Husband’s soul. The eternal part of him.

WOOER - (M) (Age: Similar-ish to the WIDOW) A strapping young suitor.

BODY - (M) The WIDOW’s husband’s body. It plays scenes from their life.
